Caitlin Mackay began her career at the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) as a rotating engineer from 2019 to 2021, gaining experience across design, construction, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), and Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAV). In 2021, she joined MDOT’s Connected and Automated Vehicles and Electrification (CAVE) unit as an engineer, where she now leads several innovative mobility and safety projects. Caitlin manages two Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) grants, Safety Alerts for Work Zones (SAFEZONE) and Partnering Automated Work Zones (PAWZ). With SAFEZONE successfully completed, she continues to advance connected, automated, and electrified transportation solutions, particularly those that enhance work zone safety and help infrastructure owner‑operators integrate emerging technologies. She also led the installation of a wrong‑way driving detection pilot, reflecting her ongoing commitment to technologies that reduce crashes and improve roadway awareness. Since then, Caitlin has remained deeply engaged in efforts that enhance commercial vehicle safety, support data‑driven decision‑making, and bring new safety tools into real‑world transportation environments. Caitlin also led the successful completion of the research project Utilizing Video Analytics w/Connected Vehicles for Improved Safety, which concluded in January 2024, and now oversees a follow‑up initiative titled Enhancing Road Safety Through Video Analytics & Connected Vehicles. This work expands the use of real‑time analytics and connected vehicle data to help agencies proactively identify risks and improve safety outcomes across the transportation system. Caitlin is a graduate of Garden City High School, holds an Associate degree in Science and Engineering from Schoolcraft College, and earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Wayne State University. She lives in Ferndale, MI, with her husband, William, and enjoys cooking, exercise, and traveling.
