Cincinnati Underground: Touring the Lytle Tunnel

Named after the park sitting directly over it, the Lytle Tunnel in Cincinnati has a rich history, serving both as an engineering marvel and a testament to the community's dedication to preserving green space amidst urban development. It should also have an IMDb page as it was featured in the 2025 film Superman during the Metropolis evacuation scene.

Lytle Park opened to the public in 1907, and when Interstate construction threatened to eliminate the park, the community stood firm that the park needed to remain and prevented it from being demolished.

The Lytle Tunnel consists of three separate bores that carry I-71 under the park and a portion of the city of Cincinnati. Original construction was completed in 1971, and in

2015 the tunnel underwent a $33 million major reconstruction to replace the lighting, electrical, ventilation, and fire protection systems.

During this 45-minute behind-the-scenes tour, attendees get an inside look at Ohio’s only official vehicular tunnel and the chance to explore the hidden mechanical and electrical rooms that showcase the three 8-foot in diameter jet fans that make this tunnel state of the art. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to go below the city to see what keeps it moving.
